It’s rare to find a book shorter than the film. In all of the her stories presented here, Eileen Chang refutes her peers’ criticism that she was a “banal boudoir realist” and instead proves herself to be a powerful writer and one who was more than able to portray the struggles of human life regardless of the historical setting. Eileen Chang’s collection of short stories give realistic insights into the minds of early 20th-century Chinese women. Of them, the highlights are possibly “Steamed Osmanthus Flower” and “Great Felicity” – both of which focus not only on women’s roles in Republican China but also provide a window into life at the time.

I should read the original Chinese. Try the Kindle edition and experience these great reading features: Yee offers to buy Chia-chih a rare diamond ring when they visit the jeweler to replace a gem from one of her earrings. Other pieces are more simply constructed but equally evocative of Shanghai in the s and 40s, where Chang grew up and began to publish.

Yet each story projects a form of melancholy that I suppose reflects the wartime situation – somewhat like Hemingway’s ever-present tragedy that is inescapable in almost all of his writing.
Only read “Lust, Caution”, didn’t bother with the other stories. It was interesting to realize how the movie makers had worked to unpack her sentences to visually create her world. Wonderfully translated at least to my untrained eyes and wonderfully written.

Even though I enjoyed the writing in the others, I was always left with a feeling of discontent at the end, mostly because I felt like each of them could easily have been a novella in itself! I’m rather sure Ang Lee does a great job of spinning a great movie out of this very basic outline. It took me one hour flat to I ‘discovered’ the book when researching Ang Lee’s then upcoming movie of the same title.
I found some of the stories difficult or slow because of how little cautiob there is, but then there were so many other things I enjoyed about her writing.
Amazon Advertising Find, attract, and engage customers. Immediately, the difference between Chang and certain “patriotic” writers becomes clear: Chang was prolific, and I will try one of her novels in the near future.
To me, it’s a straight forward story, capturing a fleeting moment in the life of a girl who falls in love with her prey.
